Chennai, Eastern India
In 2011 our 5 person team from YWAM (Youth With a Mission) flew out to Eastern India from Airlie Beach Australia. There our Australian/American team spent almost two months serving local communities by serving in humanitarian and faith based projects. Here is a sample of some of our teams experiences there.
Train rides in India are an eye (and nose) opening experience. All of your senses are put to the test! We jumped on one of the North/South running trains to take an 6 hour trip from Chennai to Chirala where we would be living for the next two months in a rented apartment for our team of 5 Americans and Aussies.
Giving out toothbrushes and soap
Giving out toothbrushes, toothpaste and combs to children; for most of them it was their first one they've ever owned. If they had one already, it was typically shared with multiple family members. So we tried to give everyone their own toothbrush to use, and then we taught them how to use it.
Visiting wild monkeys
We rode a rickshaw to the outskirts of our city to visit a local spot where wild monkeys like to hang out. Here's a short clip from that trip. More videos and vlogs are on my youtube channel, check them out and please subscribe for new content added weekly!
Teaching English and playing games
A typical school house where mixed ages of children learn their basics, usually with very limited resources and materials.
We were blessed to spend time with the children, and help them practice their English and play games. Spending time with the students in their school left me with some amazing memories of India, and sparked my passion to begin teaching the following years.

After school, we taught the kids how to play Duck Duck Goose.
Here are some assorted times while we traveled around our area we lived: our teams ladies dressed in the local attire. Heading out to the Bay of Bengal for a Christian baptism service for the our local church congregation. Me speaking to a village, their first time hearing the "Christmas Story". And me speaking again at a local church we would spend a lot of time building friendships and serving at.
